WIND’S PARTNERSHIP WITH COLEGIO HOREB

In 2011, WIND partnered with the Christian school Colegio Evangelico Horeb. The school was founded in 2007 by a local woman, Tabita Juana Toma de la Cruz, who understands the culture and complexity surrounding education in her community.

By 2010 enrollment had dropped to only 28 students. The school was unable to pay teachers and was on the brink of closing.

WIND came alongside Horeb and helped provide teachers with a small salary and basic materials (textbooks and desks). Over time WIND offered scholarships, started a feeding program for malnourished children, built wood burning stoves for the poorest families, and brought dental care to the area.

Today, only eleven years later, there are 370+ students receiving a high-quality education at Colegio Horeb. The school now offers education for preschool through ninth grade. The dedicated teaching staff has grown from five teachers in 2011 to 22 teachers today.

HOW WIND IS INVOLVED AT HOREB

• WIND pays teachers’ salaries and provides student scholarships.

• WIND provides meals for severely malnourished students through our feeding program.

• WIND brings several teams each year to come alongside the students and staff at Horeb.

• WIND brings dental teams twice a year to provide dental care to Horeb students and their families, as well as for people from the surrounding communities.

• WIND facilitates the 21 Girls Program, which encourages girls to stay in school through the sixth grade.

2021 colegio Horeb overview

In the school year that runs from January through November 2021, Colegio Horeb is navigating the challenges of teaching students during the global pandemic. Classes have begun and stopped several times in response to community surges of the virus. Teaching remotely, without the connectivity provided by the internet and computers, is extremely difficult.

For the teachers at Horeb, remote learning involves preparing class lessons and delivering them house-to-house and providing instruction child-by-child. Teachers are required to visit every student at least once every two weeks to pick up assignments and present new assignments. They also record short videos which are sent via WhatsApp to students and their parents.

During Graduation in November, record numbers of children will graduate from Kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade.

The teachers and school staff all look forward to the continuation of consistent, in-classroom instruction.
